  • Commend yourself. Reminding yourself how you’ve been doing well is another effective mind-over-matter trick. You can even use famous lines such as, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul” and combine it with “I can do this! I’ve survived days without it. It is just a craving and it will go away. I am doing so well and there is no reason for me to do otherwise.”

The more you focus on food, the higher the risk of you triggering a food craving. Keep in mind that there is more to life than food. Always keep yourself busy and engage in activities that are highly distracting. Have a list of activities ready so that when you find yourself with some idle time, you can go back and distract yourself again. In the list, you may include activities such as hanging out with friends, browsing interesting websites, gardening, engaging in crafts and other hobbies, participating in sports and many more.

For women, shopping whether online or in an outlet store is a great way to be distracted.

Another effective means of distracting yourself is by brushing your teeth. Whenever you feel a craving, brush your teeth. Studies show that this trick the mind into thinking that it already ate. The cool and fresh minty taste in your mouth may be able to wipe away any food craving that you have.

Eating in moderation is always the key. If you have a favorite food and it is not one of those foods can trigger bingeing or craving, then, indulge in moderation, every once in a while. As much as you like sugary foods, you should just give in to this before bedtime and immediately brush your teeth after.
